The Typology Of Light
The intention of this project is to create new and unexpected languages of light through offering users agency to enhance or transform their own experience. It is inherently an aesthetic exploration of the subtleties of light. It challenges and encourages conversation around how consider form when designing for lighting objects by focusing on the illumination effect as the designed product.
This project has developed from a childlike curiosity and exploration of natural sunlight. Observing the delicacy of light through its interactions with the built environment, its effects on the human experience and its expressions in art, as a driver for object lighting design.
This project currently sits largely within the field of Object Design. It is also fed by the intersecting fields of; Installation Art/Design, Commercial Design and Human and Technology Interaction. Design research methods used in this project include Research Photography, Time-lapse and Film to observe the fleeting moments that light creates. Material Exploration to explore how light interacts with materials through refraction, reflection and shadow.
The result of this Design Research is a sculptural lighting object that offers an interactive aesthetic experience. The outcome is a minimal stripped back form that prizes the illumination effect with the purpose is to challenge what we traditionally think of as a lighting object and suggest questions about how to design aesthetic form
