The Konpakuto — Traditional desk with a modern-twist
The importance of a high-quality workspace within a home is a common practice that is evident in today’s modern society. The work area has become a new space in contemporary homes and part of domestic life for many young professionals who work as freelance or as consultants. While our work/job practices have changed, we have not seen the same evolution in the context of furniture design. Existing solutions are not able to integrate productivity for working and the comfort of domestic life. This project explored the phenomenon of working at home while identifying the needs and expectations of young professionals, who find it difficult and stressful to work at a desk that isn’t inherently organised.
The Konpakuto (Con-pac-toe) is an organised conventional desk with a modern twist that draws on Japanese minimalistic culture and traditional wood craftsmanship. The desk is designed to help increase productivity so that studying and working arrangements are more flexible and comfortable. Although this cannot stop the nature of human behaviour of slipping back into habits, like leaving things lying around, the purpose of this design is to help and encourage individuals to become more organised by putting things away when not needed. Hopefully over time, consumers will gradually adapt to the simplistic design of the desk by changing the way they traditionally behave.
