In modern society, smartphones are designed as an “all in one” device to replace other electronic gadgets and held by people all day long. These led to smartphone addiction becoming a globally burning issue. This design project investigates the relationship between rituals and industrial design. It provides a brand new solution to help mobile phone addicts overcome the problem of overusing screens before sleep, and stimulates audiences` awareness of smartphone addiction.
The final outcome is a multi-functional bedside lamp. It is a timekeeping device as well, aims to reduce the time people spent on their smartphones before sleep and help them form good sleep habits. The design product applies the nature of rituals, to provide a transition between activity and sleep for users` brains. Also, it transformed the traditional ritual of burning incense into the modern world.
