Vestigios, Drinking vessel collection celebrating Colombian rituals.
Colombia has a rich heritage of craft production. Today many traditional crafts still exist in ceramic, metal, weaving and wood production ; however Colombia lacks a strong Designer Maker scene that is evident in Western countries like Australia. This project explores my Colombian heritage and culture to look at the possibilities of developing and promoting Colombian Craft culture utilising a Western Design sensibility.
The objective of this project is to create a simple utilitarian, well made, high quality set of artefacts based on the daily drinking rituals of contemporary Colombians. This drinking set- to make the daily fix of Hot Chocolate- will be explored in both Terracotta and Porcelain versions. By bringing together traditional Colombian crafts, customs, culture and ways with contemporary processes and elements the final outcome will fit in both contemporary Colombian and international markets.
This project will reinvigorate Colombian traditional crafts and bring design elements into them. Today, the traditional Colombian crafts lack many design elements and there is an opportunity to incorporate industrial design into craft making to create artefacts that are not only useful but also beautiful. It is also important to me as a Colombian designer to discover a new design journey by working with Colombian artisans and discovering the hidden elements of Colombian culture.
