Skin and Bone –
‘The room of reflection‘
My passion for design over the course of my study has manifested itself into many things. The foundation of my values as a designer has been dictated by the many disciplines I’ve engaged in during the course of my study. I’ve found that I enjoy how materials can be manipulated in lurid ways, the abstraction of conventional and conservative values and inspired by the idea of how things aren’t always as they seem. There is a poetic substance in the rituals we engage in every day, but we have become so desensitised to them we are comfortable with remaining static in our subjectivity.
Rest, privacy, light, storage, purification and reflection are the main themes I explore surrounding the motifs of the dressing room. “The room of reflection” is what these themes have manifested themselves as. Consisting of a day bed, room divider, floor lamp, cabinet basin and vanity, these objects in unison with each other create an experience where in its intention is to provoke social discourse.
It has always been an ever-present theme throughout my work, highlighting the relationships we create with our surroundings, through materials, through thought and through being present. The underlying message of my work is that, in the intricacies of our everyday lives, our everyday struggles, every day mundane experiences we all have one thing in common…
We are nothing but skin and bone.
