Currently, prosthetic arm products exist at the level of lab research technology, the focus is on function alone. But to be successful a product must do more than merely function. It needs to accommodate a wide range of users and their individual tastes, preferences, situations, and needs.
Through research in current design and production process of additive manufactured implant and various prosthetic design for personal use, an understanding of designed modular prosthetic as a commercial customised product has been developed. This research shows there is a broad potential market for personal prosthesis and explains the associated services and preparations for design and production. The result of this research is utilised to develop a design concept of a personal prosthetic arm which has modular parts that can be replaced and reassembly.
The experience the user will have with their prosthetic is as important as the mechanical functions their prosthetic can perform, maybe even more important. The aim of the project is to close this gap in prosthetic technology by bringing human factors, customizability, modularity, user experience, as well as manufacturing and supply, together into a resolved piece of product design.
