Nest Burial – Alexander Marshall
Nest is a design project that contributes and assists the discourse from the Natural Death Movement (NDM), as a critique of the harmful practices within the ‘traditional’ funeral industry.
Traditionally, westerners attempt to think of death as little as possible. We look to archaic power structures and authorities to guide us through times of mourning and loss. However, a growing amount of people are reconsidering this archaic approach, and reclaiming death as a part of their life. One of the key movements driving this is the NDM, which seeks to minimise the negative environmental aspects of dying. That is, by returning to the Earth as naturally and quickly as possible.
Nest presents a biodegradable urn targeted towards the niche market of the NDM which contributes to the contemporary dialogue around our approach to death and mourning. How through the experience of mortality, both our own and others, can we integrate, learn and grow as a society and individuals within the speculative context of bush land and forest burial? Nest draws on aesthetics from the natural environment, and Wabi-Sabi (“The art of imperfect beauty. Accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay.”), and presents it within an ambient, emotive narrative which seeks to demonstrate value and create desire for more natural ways of returning to the earth and finding growth, not harm.
On the opposite side of this dialogue, is the ‘traditional’ funeral industry. Practices within the ‘traditional’ funeral industry focus on the preservation of the body, preventing decay. From the use carcinogenic embalming fluids to cement vaulted graves (among many more). Our impacts of this preservation approach are beginning to be felt, as cemeteries across Melbourne move to leased, rather than permanent grave sites.
Nest provides a point in which the audience can reflect upon current practices and start the discussion within themselves.
