The use of space and objects plays a big role in our everyday lives, and has a great importance to the flow in which we go about our daily activities. Those working in open plan office spaces will face many day to day challenges in various situations. In particular, this project focuses primarily on the sound and space of an office worker.
Any source of noise in a working space can considerably impact on productivity. The report ‘Health, Wellbeing & Productivity in Offices’ by the World Green Building Council demonstrates that 66% of office workers drop in performance when exposed to distracting noise. Research undertaken with various users in the open-plan office environment, from administrators to health workers, further supports the impact; that environmental noise can cause irritation, distraction and drop in productivity, affecting individual and organisational work performance.
By examining and learning through the fields of interior design, furniture design and spatial design, this project seeks to provide an interactive object that encourages a continuous close relation with the series of events that occur in an open plan office environment. This project seeks to improve to the worker’s daily experience in an open-plan office by providing an aesthetic, sound-absorbing, modular object that can be customised to suit the needs of office workers
