Australian organic garlic is a premium product with huge potential for local market expansion. The small organic farm at Emerald suburb is growing a new type of garlic, called Elephant garlic or Russian garlic.
Working closely with the farmer, and in consultation with a local engineer, a new effective solution for planting conventional garlics and the new garlic, that is less labour intensive and meets the new garlic’s precision planting standards is proposed. The design also considers the Australian organic standard guide and applied it as a philosophy and guide for the final design materials and manufacturing method. The final design has been developed to be low impact for the environment in both its application and during its life cycle.
Applying design methods, prototyping experiment, and observational research under the farmer’s guide and collaboration at the farm context, the M.O.G Planter (Multi-purpose Organic Garlic Planter) was made as a solution for small farms, but could be flexible for large farms by its modular design. The planter also is applicable for various garlic seed sizes and their planting specifications, by its transformation and assembling mechanism. The planter is flexible, handy, ergonomic and friendly environmental agricultural equipment for the small organic farm.
