This research project explores the field of interactive and electrical toy design (ITD). Interactive toys contain differing levels of embedded technology that range from flashing LED’s to more complex features such as micro-controllers and mechanically driven parts. Since emerging in the 20th century, interactive toys have solidified their place in the international market and have thus created a demand for innovation.

Through research and development, this project has created a set of toys with the intention to facilitate play and entertainment. The design outcome takes the form of an interactive, LEGO compatible, modular and wirelessly enabled system called Kiungo.

With Kiungo, a user may interact and create a world of wirelessly enabled objects such as RC cars, imaginative scenes, DIY contraptions and so much more; imagination is the limit. Unlike current interactive toys that aim to educate children on robotics, circuitry and code, Kiungo was developed so the user may easily build and interact within this environment without the need to understand the underlying technologies. Kiungo… play your way.
