This project explores the intersection of craft and contemporary industrial design practice from the perspective of a
designer-maker. Parametric modelling software has been used in combination with digital fabrication techniques to explore how algorithmic design can find suitable applications in slip cast ceramic batch-production.
Clay, as a ubiquitous material that is steeped in history and tradition, offering a tactile medium that perfectly captures the marks of the marker, and manifests the unique character evident within objects created by the human hand. The fickle nature of this material offers the perfect counterpoint to the precision and efficiency of digital technologies, allowing for the development of contemporary objects that are unique while still preserving the soul of the material and the skilled influence of the human hand.
The outcome of the research project is a series of decorative lighting artefacts that seeks to blur the boundaries between craft and industrial design practices, partaking equally from both.
