Connect: Sharing the Designer-Maker Experience
Drawing inspiration from the simplicity and functionality of mid-20th century Danish furniture design, Connect reconceives essential furniture elements as an assembly system for multiple furniture typologies.
Emerging from an investigation into the historical and contemporary framework of the designer-maker, this project looks at the idea of the designer-maker as the ‘care-taker’ of a design, and asks how this can be extended to the user by involving them in the assembly of the furniture item. Having a unique connection with the objects they design and make, designer-makers develop the furniture concept, perform a lead role in the material selection, exploration and production of the item, and oversee quality control. Through this process, a bond is established between the designer-maker and the object. Connect is an explorative project that suggests an ‘open-design’ – enabling the transference of care-ethic from the designer-maker to the user by providing them with an opportunity to assemble, complete, or finish the object.
