3D printing in Amateur Motorsport
The project, “3D printing in Amateur Motorsport” was conducted to determine if 3D printing is a viable technology for the amateur circuit racing community. Professional race teams such as McLaren have made the technology staple in their manufacturing capabilities with strong results and this project proposes to trickle down the technology to aid the development of the amateur circuit racing.
Using an engineering and design approach, in consultation with the racing community, specialised components for the Porsche 944 series sports car were identified as an opportunity to design components that are 3D printed to enhance the driving experience and lower participants running costs.
The community was then invited to give feedback on designs and then to use and test concepts to improve the end products. As part of the outcomes of this project, competitors were provided with low cost, custom plastic components made for their racing benefit from a design printing service that aims to support their community growth and development.
